Can I connect a USB barometer to navigation or sailing software?

Yes, with the BAR20-N. It communicates through a virtual COM port and outputs standard NMEA sentences (MDA and XDR), the language of GPS and navigation systems. It works with navigation software such as OpenCPN and Expedition: we have a step-by-step tutorial for Expedition.

Two things to know:

  • The BAR20-N is not supported by DracalView or our integration tools, since it speaks NMEA. If you want a barometer for logging and integration instead, choose the BAR20 (with the VCP option if you prefer a serial port).
  • For a small weather station, a PTH series sensor adds temperature and humidity to the pressure reading in one device.
